What is ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR ®[1] is an international symbol which helps consumers clearly identify the most energy efficient products sold in the marketplace. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR symbol, products must meet strict energy efficiency specifications.
In Canada, it is the Natural Resources Canada Office of Energy Efficiency that administers and monitors the international ENERGY STAR symbol.

ENERGY STAR Qualified Windows and Doors
Since windows and doors are components of the building envelope, as opposed to energy-consuming products such as refrigerators and dishwashers, the term ENERGY STAR qualified is used when speaking of windows and doors. [2].

Cost-saving guidelines for ENERGY STAR Qualified Windows and Doors
  • Replacing all the original windows and doors in the average older home by ENERGY STAR qualified windows and doors would reduce a family’s energy consumption by roughly 7 percent – dropping the annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by three quarters of a tonne.
  • Building the average new home with ENERGY STAR qualified windows and doors opposed to customary products would reduce the energy consumption by roughly 16 percent. [3]

Choosing the right windows and doors for your Climate Zone
Due to the wide range of climates across the country and, given that windows and doors are an important part of the building envelope‚ four climate zones were developed for Canada. These four zones range from Zone A to D; Zone A being the mildest region, to Zone D, the coldest. [4] For example, a home in the Ottawa/Gatineau area would require Zone B certified windows and doors.

By choosing ENERGY STAR qualified windows and doors, you will save money and energy, as well as reduce air pollution; all this without sacrificing the features, versatility and style you expect in your windows and doors. The Ottawa/Gatineau area is Zone B certified. Come visit Théo Mineault to get more information and to see our selection of Zone B, Energy Star qualified windows and doors.
